The Diamond: Light, Quality, and the 4Cs
1. The 4Cs — Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight. The four-factor system used by every major grading lab to evaluate a diamond’s quality and price. All four interact: a well-cut diamond in a lower color grade can still outperform a poorly cut colorless stone in terms of visible sparkle.
2. Cut — Probably the most important of the 4Cs for how a diamond actually looks. Cut refers not to shape (round, oval, pear) but to how precisely the stone’s facets are angled and proportioned. Grades typically run from Excellent/Ideal down to Poor. A diamond graded Excellent reflects light back through the top of the stone efficiently; a Poor cut leaks light through the sides or bottom, making the stone look dull regardless of color or clarity.
3. Color — Measures the absence of color in a white diamond. The standard alphabetical scale runs from D (completely colorless) to Z (a visible light yellow or brown tint). Diamonds graded D through F are colorless; G through J are near-colorless and often look identical to D-F stones when set in a ring. Buyers who choose a near-colorless stone and pair it with a yellow or rose gold band frequently save money without any visible trade-off.
4. Clarity — Measures the presence of internal features (inclusions) and surface features (blemishes) under 10x magnification. The scale runs from Flawless (FL) down through VVS1/VVS2, VS1/VS2, SI1/SI2, to Included (I1–I3). A stone graded VS2 or SI1 is often eye-clean, meaning inclusions aren’t visible without magnification—and for most buyers, that’s all that matters.
5. Carat Weight — The unit of mass used to weigh diamonds, where one carat equals exactly 200 milligrams. Carat is a measure of weight, not physical size—two diamonds of the same carat weight can look noticeably different in diameter depending on their cut. A well-proportioned 1.0ct round diamond typically measures around 6.4–6.5mm across.
6. Brilliance — The white light that reflects back to your eye from the interior of a diamond. Brilliance is primarily a function of cut quality. When people say a diamond
is bright,
they’re usually describing brilliance.
7. Fire — The flashes of spectral color—red, orange, blue, violet—you see when a diamond moves under light. Fire comes from the dispersion of white light into its component wavelengths as it passes through the angled facets. A diamond with strong fire in a dim room looks dramatically different from the same stone in bright sunlight.
8. Scintillation — The pattern of light and dark areas, plus the sparkle you see as the diamond, your hand, or the light source moves. Scintillation is what makes a diamond look alive rather than static. It’s distinct from both brilliance and fire.
9. Fluorescence — A diamond’s tendency to emit a soft glow (usually blue) when exposed to ultraviolet light. Graded on a scale from None to Very Strong. In most lighting conditions, fluorescence is invisible. In diamonds with Strong or Very Strong fluorescence, there can occasionally be a slightly hazy or milky appearance in direct sunlight, though this affects a minority of stones. For buyers on a budget, a diamond with Medium fluorescence and a lower color grade can sometimes look whiter in everyday light—and cost less.
10. Eye-Clean — An informal but useful term describing a diamond whose inclusions are not visible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance (roughly 10–12 inches). It doesn’t appear on grading reports, but experienced gemologists use it constantly. An SI1 diamond that is eye-clean is often a smarter buy than a VS2 that costs 20–30% more.
11. Lab-Grown Diamond — A diamond grown in a controlled environment using either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) technology. Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and optical properties as mined diamonds. They are graded on the same 4C scales and certified by the same major labs. The primary difference is origin—and typically, price, since lab-grown stones tend to cost significantly less per carat than mined equivalents of comparable quality.
12. Fancy Color Diamond — A diamond that falls outside the standard D-to-Z white diamond color range and instead displays a distinct hue—yellow, pink, blue, green, orange, or red. Fancy colors are graded on a separate intensity scale (Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid). Fancy Vivid yellow and pink diamonds are among the most sought-after color grades.
The Ring’s Anatomy: Structure and Settings
13. Setting — The metalwork that holds the stone or stones in place. Setting style has a large effect on how a ring looks, how secure the stone is, and how much light reaches it. Common setting styles include prong, bezel, pavé, channel, and flush.
14. Prong — The small metal claws—typically four or six—that grip the center stone and hold it above the band. More prongs generally mean more security; fewer prongs allow more light to enter the stone. Four-prong settings are common for round diamonds; six-prong settings tend to suit larger stones above 1.5ct.
15. Bezel — A setting in which a continuous metal rim encircles the entire perimeter of the stone. Bezel settings offer the most protection against chipping and are a practical choice for people with active lifestyles. The trade-off is that the metal rim covers the stone’s girdle, which can make it look slightly smaller than a prong-set stone of the same carat weight.
16. Pavé — Pronounced

Tiny diamonds set closely together along the band with minimal metal showing between them, creating a surface that appears encrusted with continuous sparkle. Pavé is frequently combined with a solitaire or halo center setting rather than used alone.
17. Halo — A ring of smaller diamonds encircling the center stone. A halo amplifies the perceived size of the center stone and adds sparkle around its perimeter. For buyers working with a tighter budget for the center stone, a halo setting can deliver more visual presence without requiring a larger carat weight.
18. Solitaire — A ring design featuring a single center stone with a plain or lightly accented metal band. Solitaires are the most classic engagement ring style and tend to age well. They also make it easy to upgrade or change the band later without affecting the center stone.
19. Three-Stone — A setting featuring one center diamond flanked by two side stones, traditionally described as representing past, present, and future. The side stones are usually 30–50% of the center stone’s diameter. Three-stone rings look more substantial than solitaires and suit buyers who want a designed rather than minimal look.
20. Shank — The band portion of the ring that wraps around the finger. Shanks can be plain, split (dividing into two strands as they approach the center stone), twisted, or set with accent diamonds. Shank width affects both comfort and how the ring looks on the hand.
21. Girdle — The narrow band around a diamond’s widest point, separating the upper portion (crown) from the lower portion (pavilion). On a grading report, girdle thickness is described on a scale from Extremely Thin to Extremely Thick. A girdle that’s too thin risks chipping during setting; one that’s too thick adds weight without adding visual size.
22. Pavilion — The lower portion of a diamond below the girdle. Pavilion angle is one of the most important factors in cut quality—it determines how efficiently light bounces back up through the table to your eye. An overly deep pavilion sends light out the sides; an overly shallow one lets it escape through the bottom.
23. Crown — The upper portion of a diamond above the girdle. The crown’s facets—particularly the bezel facets—are primarily responsible for fire (color dispersion). Crown angle, measured in degrees on a grading report, interacts with pavilion angle to produce a diamond’s overall light performance.
24. Culet — The small facet or point at the very bottom of a diamond. On most modern cuts, the culet is graded
None,
meaning the pavilion comes to a sharp point rather than a flat face. A large culet can appear as a dark circle when you look straight down through the table, which is generally undesirable.
25. Accent Stones / Side Stones — Smaller diamonds set along the shank or around the center stone to complement it. Accent stones add visual complexity and sparkle but should not distract from the center stone. The Grading Report: Numbers That Actually Matter
26. IGI Certification — A diamond grading report issued by the International Gemological Institute (IGI), one of the most widely used certification bodies for lab-grown diamonds. An IGI report details the 4Cs, plus measurements, proportions, symmetry, polish, fluorescence, and a clarity plot. Table percentage appears on every grading report and is one of the first numbers to check when evaluating cut quality. For round brilliant diamonds, a table percentage between 54% and 57% is generally considered ideal—at this proportion, light enters the stone at angles that maximize both brilliance and fire. A table that’s too large or too small reduces one or both of those qualities. 28. Depth Percentage — The height of a diamond from the table to the culet, expressed as a percentage of the average girdle diameter. For round brilliants, a depth percentage between 59% and 62.5% is widely considered the sweet spot. A diamond that’s too shallow loses light through the pavilion; one that’s too deep traps light inside and looks dark in the center. 29. Polish — A grade describing the smoothness and quality of each facet’s surface finish. Graded from Ideal/Excellent down to Poor. Polish grades of Very Good or Excellent are standard in quality engagement rings; anything below Good can introduce surface-level light scattering that slightly reduces brilliance.
30. Symmetry — A grade describing how precisely a diamond’s facets align with one another. If facets are offset or misaligned, the diamond’s light performance suffers even if the proportions are technically correct. Like polish, symmetry is graded from Excellent to Poor. For a well-cut diamond, you generally want both polish and symmetry at Very Good or Excellent.
